Spain & Spanish
Jan and Chris run this group together and we presently number 10 regular members.
We meet weekly in the Porthmadog Football Club, there is a charge of £2-50 per week which pays for the hire of the room and refreshments.
We do very little in the way of grammar although obviously this does come up with the emphasis being put on reading/translation and each week we have a different subject to study, whether it be a chapter from a book telling a child's version of events in the Spanish Civil War, the history/geography of a particular town/city, a 'fiesta' or the life of a famous Spaniard such as Gaudi or El Cordobes, the bullfighter.
We have also discussed the Spanish (and British) Royal Family and even politics! We have watched Spanish films and listened to music. We usually celebrate Christmas with Spanish Christmas goodies such as tortilla (an omelette made only from eggs, potatoes and onions and maybe a little garlic of course and turron a traditional sweet made from ground almonds and honey. And of course we sing a few 'villancincos' (Christmas carols)
Although members come and go there are a few hard core members who really enjoy the group and feel it has helped tremendously their knowledge of the language. At the moment the group is full but if you are interested in joining us please contact either Jan or Chris to see if we have space for you
