The group has been going strong for some years; the number attending regularly is about ten. Over the years we have covered a great number of topics about language in general (too many to be mentioned here) and there is always a lively discussion on each topic.
The session lasts for two hours and is held on the second Thursday of each month from 10 to 12 at the Church Hall in Penrhyndeudraeth. The normal format covers several periods, the first usually being a specific topic (sometimes introduced by a member of the group) followed by an extensive discussion. After an hour we have a short coffee break. The next topic is invariable: an examination of a varied list of words brought up in the previous meeting and discussed by the group; the list includes meanings, origins, and dates of words introduced into English. Fairly recently these were incorporated into a booklet: ‘A Thousand Words and More’; we are well under way to the next thousand. The next part of the session is given to miscellaneous topics concerning language. We often finish with a quiz to end the session on high note.
We welcome anyone with an interest in language.
